about

Transcribed from original vinyl description:

Lovers of Big Bands never tire of hearing their favorites. And those who have favorite songs - played by a favorite orchestra - never tire of hearing that number. They love to compare the performances of other bands and leaders to the rendition that they love.

Some time ago, we issued an album, "Salute to the Band Leaders", which we felt was definitive. Definitive in the sense that we had selected the most popular leaders and recorded the songs with which they had been identified. It soon became apparent, however, that there were other bandleaders with theme that were just as well liked - so here we have "Salute to the Band Leaders" Volume Two.

On this album, we have chosen some of the most popular band leaders and interpreted with our 'Big Sound' Orchestra musical selections that have long been identified with them. We know that you will delight in the performances themselves and feel sure that they will stir many fond memories of an earlier day.

Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" has become a classic - and it was with a great deal of trepidation that our "Big Sound" approached this classic with its stellar performance but this performance of the "Lady" is stellar, too.

Mitch Miller's stirring rendition of Yellow Rose of Texas is called to mind with the "Big Sound". It is interesting to compare the performance with the original. These performances are indeed great tributes to outstanding performers.

Les Brown's "Study in Brown", Tommy Dorsey's "Song of India" and many others live again - differently, yet the same, on this album. It is indeed a wonder how performances by outstanding musicians of certain numbers takes on a flavor all their own so that, ultimately, that particular number becomes the theme or belongs to that certain leader. But to salute a leader and to acknowledge his preeminence in a field through a certain performance implies that the orchestra or leader making obeisance render an outstanding performance, too. This "The Big Sound" has done. On this album appear songs attesting to the musicianship of certain acknowledged band leaders. Yet, on this album appear songs attesting to the musicianship of the Big Sound and acknowledging its right to honor for not one, not two, but ten outstanding themes.
